L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine is a protein-building amino acid that is important for maintaining muscle as well as supporting immune and intestinal health through the synthesis of glutathione (GSH), the body’s natural antioxidant.* Although the body can synthesize L-Glutamine, it is often considered an essential amino acid during period of elevated stress and critical illness, during which the body cannot synthesize enough.
The main role of L-Glutamine is to help the body prevent infections and promote wound healing. Injuries, burns, infections and even surgical incisions place stress on the body, which can cause the release of cortisol, depleting glutamine stores. L-Glutamine supplements can help the body boost immune function, reduce infection, and encourage healing. L-Glutamine has also been used as a nutrient to reduce atrophy of the digestive tract lining and also plays a major role in preserving muscle. A common problem during the natural aging process is the loss of lean muscle, or wasting, as muscle tends to breakdown – a condition known as “sarcopenia”. Glutamine inhibits the breakdown of body protein, preventing the loss of muscle mass. *
